Finding your Best Exercise

Just like with your new healthy eating plan, regular exercise is essential for long term weight loss and health improvements. But how do you learn to actually enjoy exercising and figure out the best exercises for losing weight that work for you?

The answer is to give it time and try different things. Think about several things you "might" like to do, or would do if only you were in shape. Maybe you would love swimming but are too embarrassed to put on a swimsuit and go to a pool.

Or perhaps your best exercise to lose weight and keep in shape used to be jogging. You felt so much better. But now you don't run because you've gained enough weight that it prevents you from running for any significant amount of time.

If you love to dance but feel too self-conscious to go to a club or take an aerobic dance class, find a DVD you like (check out what your local library has before you pay for one you like) and do aerobics or dancing at home.

Some Simple Tips

Finding your best exercise to lose weight may take a little time and experimenting. Follow a few simple tips and soon you'll be moving and shaking with the best of them. Figure out your best fat burning exercises. Try a few different weight loss workouts you "think" you might like and choose just one. You can add more or change them later.

  • Make a specific time of day for your new activity. If you know for certain you can't work out at the same time each and every day, work that into your exercise plan and allow for the differences in schedule. Plan ahead. Put exercise on your schedule just like any other must-do daily activity such as eating and sleeping.
  • Anna says: "I was the quintessential couch potato and thought it would take a stick of dynamite to get me up and moving. I knew I had to improve my life and lose weight, and that regular exercise would have to be a part of it. I gave some thought to the kind of activities I would like if I were in better shape and at my goal weight. I tried walking, swimming, aerobics, yoga, and a treadmill. I found that my best exercise to lose weight was surprisingly the aerobics and yoga. So I started out doing 10 minutes of aerobics followed by 10 minutes of yoga each morning when I got out of bed. I'm now doing 40 minutes of aerobics 3 times a week and 40 minutes of yoga 2 times each week. On the weekends I go for an hour walk. I've lost 32 of the 90 pounds to my goal weight. Along with a sensible diet (not deprivation) I look forward to getting out and moving my body. I can truly say, if I can change from hating exercise to loving it, anyone can!"

  • Start slow and work your way up. You know you have to start somewhere, but that doesn't mean you have to be running the quarter mile but the end of the week. Instead it means that you have to choose one little thing, like dancing in your living room, doing aerobics to a DVD, or going for a little walk. Commit to some kind of exercise for 10 minutes in the beginning. After a week do ten minutes 2 times per day, or kick the 10 minutes up to 20 all at one time, its up to you. The point is, if you hate exercise, start slow at the bottom and work your way up to your own fitness goal.
  • Start Small for Big Weight Loss

    So just do it. Start with something small, do it for a few minutes and each time add a minute or two. Most people associate exercise with things they think are boring like jogging or walking, or something that is too hard like aerobics and strength training. Think of exercise in a new light. Instead of sweating and straining and pain, think of toning and becoming stronger and feeling so much better. You'll be surprised how soon you'll be looking forward to your new weight loss workouts once you find your best exercise to lose weight that works for you.

    Add Music to Your Weight Loss Workouts

    Try something different. Don't just walk. Walk in a park or on a beach you like. Take your iPod along and listen to your favorite songs while you get moving. Music is a great way to enjoy activities that are otherwise boring. Turning on music in your living room and dancing for 10 or 15 minutes is a great way to start for many people. Hate the stationary bicycle and find it tedious? Switch to a regular bike and find a great outdoor place to ride. This is another activity easy to do while listening to your iPod.
